The Federal Capital Territory Universal Basic Education Board Acting Executive Chairman,Dr. Alhassan Sule has enjoined Education Management Information System( EMIS) Officers to adopt the new technology in tracking of attendance in FCT Public Basic schools so that FCT will be a reference point for other SUBEB across the nation to emulate.

Dr. Sule stated this while declaring open A 2- Day Training Workshop for EMIS Officers in FCT Education Secretariat,UBEB and the Six LEAs on Better Education System Delivery for All( BESDA) Attendance Management Information System( BAMIS) Digital Application for monitoring of attendance.

The training was organized by the Board in collaboration with Universal Basic Education Commission,UBEC.

LEA Abuja Municipal headquarters ,Wuse Zone 2 played host in the event.

Dr. Sule maintained that FCT UBEB has played a leading role in the initiation of activities that will help to move the FCT basic Education system to a higher pedestal such as the Head – to head debate which complements the Federal government effort in the amelioration of the incidence of out – of – School Children in the territory and also being in the forefront as far as Smart Education is concerned.

He reminded the forum that the difference between a developed nation and a developing one is the level of education and implementation of things in practical terms with regard to technology. He recounted of his experiences as a teacher while in Soviet Union in the 90s where class activities were monitored via technology and said that it was high time we followed suit.

He thanked the FCT Minister , Barr. Nyesom Wike , Honourable Minister of State,Hajia Mariya Mamoud and the Secretary for Education,Dr. Danlami Hayyo for always supporting the course of Basic Education delivery in FCT through their giant strides in infrastructural development.

In his Goodwill message, Barr. Nasiru Ahmed,Head, BESDA Coordinating Support Unit, UBEC expressed his delight to be in the event which he added is a milestone in the administration of Basic Education in FCT. He affirmed that BAMIS is an application developed to track attendance in our Public school schools and would help to strengthen data collection for the purpose of planning . He noted that with out digital data , planning will be difficult hence the need for accurate data. He disclosed that the training on the application has been cascaded to most of the states and FCT and it will go along way in building the capacity of EMIS officers and providing data for planning purposes. He expressed hope that more of the intervention will be seen not just in UBEC but also through State Universal Basic Education Boards and FCT.

In a separate Goodwill message, Mr. Abunike Joseph O,Director , Department of Planning , Policy , Research and Statistics,DPPRS, stated that one of the recurring issues in education has been the case of Out- of – School children which no one knows the actual figure because of non availability and unreliable data. He stated that it was based on the need to ensure a reliable data that the DPPRS was created. He attested to the fact that a full data is a veritable tool for research, planning , policy formulation and implementation. He noted that there are a lot of misnomer in the issue of out of school children. He cited a example where children receiving Koranic Integrated Programme were classified as being out of school whereas the basic literacy is being infused in the learners in addition to the religious aspect simply because they were not properly captured or classified. He expressed optimism that the programme will correct this misnomer and also help the country to exit from the E- nine countries who are noted for large percentage of out of school children.

Remarking at programme,Mr. Cimbo B. Leda,Director Planning ,Research and Statistics of the Board reeled out the objectives of the programme as: to build the capacity of EMIS officers to effectively support digitalization of attendance in Public Basic Schools in FCT and to institutionalize data collection , monitoring and management in FCT Basic Education. He opined that it will serve as train the trainers workshop. He implored the participants to pay attention and ask questions in whatever that is unclear to them.

In attendance were the LEA Secretaries , Directors from the Board among others.
